It's a science fiction movie of the 70's that didn't age up a bit even after decades of CGI and Top-Notch technology. SO ahead of it's time. The crazy thing is that it actually got better with the time. God i love it.

I don't get it. It's like adults reading Harry Potter. It's a film for the under-10s! Cowboys and Indians in space... oooh a light sabre; plastic, cheap and stagey.

Well it's pretty simple. Star Wars is fucking brilliant. The lightsaber wasn't the gimmick of the movie by the way, it only makes a few appearances in it. 'Cowboys and Indians in space.' I don't understand what you are saying there, and I don't really see the problem with those things anyway. It actually was a pretty cheap film but the special effects still hold up today. 'Stagey' - It is a movie, it's not real life. I really don't know what that means, if you want to criticize something then be specific. I don't know if you're talking about the sets or the acting or what. The film's appeal is primarily for children but does that mean we shouldn't regard Pixar movies as great animations because it's 'for the under=10s'. Harry Potter and Star Wars are fantasy stories that are used for escapism.

Your comment sucks and Star Wars rules.

I'd say that Star Wars had a much larger impression on Hollywood than 2001. 2001 was a flop whereas Star Wars made fortunes. Star Wars excites more general audiences than 2001. Hollywood thrives on profitable movies and Star Wars definitely made profit.

2001 was a flop? Wtf are you taking about? 2001 was a smash hit that wasn't just the highest grossing film of 1968 but went on to become one of the highest grossing films of the entire decade.

Nay. There are most likely far more overrated movies. This movie had a surprisingly low percentage on Rotten Tomatoes, considering its ranking on this website. Even so, I don't believe it's good enough to match the 97-100% certified fresh of rotten tomatoes [those are the true masterpieces]

I know this will be unpopular and may be seen as "attacking" a beloved franchise (which apparently is beyond even the most benign criticism, judging how an admitted super nerd like Simon Pegg was attacked after he merely made an accurate observation on the nature of movie making after Star Wars), but honestly it's not a great film in my eyes. I see the entertainment value, and I get the popularity to some extent, but to label it one of the greatest films seems farcical. One of the most impactful? Undoubtedly. Great? Not even close.
If people could step away from their nostalgia fueled cinematic taste buds and really break this film down, maybe they could see it for what it was, while still loving it instead of pretending it's some kind of flawless masterpiece. It's dialogue is chunky and nonsensical (just ask Sir Alec Guinness), it's mysticism is childish, the performances are far from nuanced, and the character building is reduced to simply cutting and pasting various archetypes.
Does that make it unlovable? Certainly not, love it to all your heart's content. I have Dogma in my top 50 for God's sake, a very flawed movie, but I love it in spite of those flaws (maybe even because of them). Let's, however, not ignore those flaws and make any film, no matter how beloved, beyond reproach.

Best of the Star Wars Movies!

2nd Best is Attack of the Clones.

3rd Best is Revenge of the Sith.

4th Best is The Phantom Menace.

2nd Worst is Return of the Jedi.

The Worst is The Empire Strikes Back.

And The Force Awakens is just bad fanfiction.

Your list looked promising at "Best of the Star Wars Movies!", although Empire is my favourite. Then it quickly got worst once you said that all the prequels were better than Jedi and Empire. Your comment about TFA being bad fan fiction is ludicrous considering that the characters are better than anything in the prequels

Why is this movie not number 1? After the droids land on Tatooine, the film really grinds to a halt here. Lucas wrote this part of the movie heavily influenced by Kirosawa and it shows. Would have been much higher, but my observations as an adult > my nostalgia as a kid. Still a classic film, and one of the best sci-fi action adventures of all time. P.S - The detention block rescue sequence in the film is the high point, and the best example on how to do character development. Film writers should study this for years to come.

Definitely one of the best and most influential movies ever. First of all beautiful shots inspired by J.Ford's masterpiece "The Searchers". Secondly and I think most importantly the depth of meaning of this film. George Lucas was inspired by "The hero's journey" this film was also inspired by: ancient religions and philosophers, Jung's and Freud's theories, etc.
The impact of this movie on the industry was undeniable after it was released there were more special effects and action in movies not only that but also empty cinemas began to be crowded. And now to those who criticize the franchise, I agree that all the episodes summoned up together are not even close to being great (similarly to Rocky, LOTR, Batman, etc. only one episode made it and as far as Rocky, Star Wars and LOTR are concerned made it to AFI top 100 Best Movies of All Time List) but this one episode is objectively speaking one of the best films ever and subjectively for me ex aequo with Pulp Fiction the GOAT.

Classic, brilliant film but mabye not #1 flickchart category. It would feel more like if the number 1 was a film like the Godfather, Shawshank Redemption, etc., flip I would be fine if Empire Strikes Back was number 1 but it's number 2.

I can see why it’s #1. It’s probably the most influential, important, and revolutionary film in history. Sure King King and Jurassic Park are close; but this thing changed the world. No movies ever had a such a incredible world before. The background creatures would usually be the main star in any previous movie. Not that the characters we’re stuck with aren’t wanted. They’re some of the greatest characters in all of fiction. Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, Princesses Lelia and obviously Darth Vader where all instantly iconic. And the film has a pitch-perfect plot. Taking you on an incredible but believable story that defines each character; and leaves you wanting more. Oh and the soundtrack is positively gorgeous. Some of the most iconic and beautiful pieces of music ever. The Empire Strikes Back may be the better film, but Star Wars was a absolute titan when released. And still 100% holds up.

You sure? Both Citizen Kane and The Godfather are probably more revolutionary to cinema than Star Wars. And 2001: A Space Odyssey had a bigger impact on the sci-fi medium than it as well.

This movie is brilliant. Not sure about number 1, tho. I personally can't see it. The cinematography isn't even close to even being considered for number 1. The screenplay as well isn't nearly tight enough to be considered for the number 1 spot, and I wouldn't even say it's the most entertaining movie (tho that's way more subjective). In terms of deeper meaning, this movie shines through its use of different philosophies, religion, and its brilliant usage of the hero's journey. I'd say it's definitely top 100, and arguably even top 50 or 30, but I wouldn't put it in the top 3
