Warner Bros. will stream Casablanca on Facebook tomorrow night (May 15) at 7:00 PM Eastern, for free. This follows a one-night-only theatrical exhibition of the film in support of its recent 70th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray box set. It also marks a dramatic step forward in using social media such as Facebook to increase exposure to movies. What about it, Flickcharters? Will you “tune in” through Facebook tomorrow night for one of the best loved films of all time? Or are you not quite ready to mix your shared LOLcats with your cinematic greats?

CBS Paramount are set to promote the forthcoming Blu-ray release of Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season One with a one-night event in theaters. On Monday, July 23rd, approximately 600 theaters will screen the remastered episodes, “Where No One Has Gone Before” and “Datalore,” along with some behind-the-scenes content. The TV show was actually shot on film so there shouldn’t be a problem with the quality of the episodes being shown on a screen that size. How about it, Trekkies? Will you pay event ticket pricing to see two TV episodes on the big screen in this one-night-only event? What about you, movie fans? How do you feel about theaters being used to show what amounts to TV reruns?
In related news, soundtrack boutique label Intrada have just begun offering the expanded Star Trek V: The Final Frontier soundtrack album. The movie itself is generally derided (it’s ranked dead last in the franchise here on Flickchart), but Jerry Goldsmith’s score has always been held in high esteem. Last year, La-La Land Records issued a limited edition 2-CD set of the score, but it sold out in a hurry and has gone for $125-150 on eBay. Here’s another crack at one of the canon’s best loved scores! Intrada has redesigned the package to be consistent with their other Star Trek soundtracks. Disc One contains the complete score; Disc Two presents the original soundtrack album and several bonus tracks. Intrada’s $24.99 is far lighter on the wallet than eBay prices.

I previously raised the issue of how we become emotionally connected to specific movies in “Yours, Mine and Ours: Our Emotional Ties to Films.” Now, I want to explore the unfortunate side of forming those attachments. What happens to our relationships with those films when our relationships change?
For instance, I am getting divorced. Before I met my wife, I had no interest in horror movies at all. That was her favorite genre, however. For the first few years we were together, I just sort of indulged her each October as she waited for the sun to go down each night to properly set the mood for some of her favorites. In my world, October was meant for the baseball playoffs. Eventually, though, I began to explore the horror genre in earnest and found myself less devoted to the divisional series games early in the month. I discovered along the way that I love the old Universal Monsters movies. My wife wasn’t particularly big on those, though, so those are “mine.”
Here we go with another round of cinematic sexiness just waiting to be discovered by a larger audience. In case you missed #16-20, be sure to check out last week’s Part One of this series… Read the rest of this entry »
