Excellent, rousing film. I was deeply affected by Hacksaw Ridge. My hat's off to Mr. Gibson, well done.

It has problems but it's a very solid war film.

The first half is pretty good, the second half is very good.

I've had Hacksaw Ridge sitting on top of my Blu Ray collection for 4 months now. What do I think? It's average. Has some things I really like and has some things I really dislike. The acting is brilliant minus Vince Vaughn as a sergeant (one of the most bizarre casting choices I've ever seen). The character of Desmond is very well written and inspiring. The first half has some great drama involving Desmond and his father and if he has a right to serve. My only fault with the drama is that the love story was very awkward, rushed and didn't go anywhere. The second half felt like a completely different movie. I loved when Desmond was going around saving the solders but the battle sequences were horrible! The camerawork was annoying, theres long lingering shots on courpses, there's both slow motion and sped up shots. It's unnecessarily over the top when it comes to gore. There's obviously fake CGI blood, dirt and explosions. There's jumpscares, people are set on fire while obviously wearing fire proof jackets. There's maggots and (very clean) rats on bloody faces which was over the top in it's self. It has a very empowering message that ends up being contradicted in the last scene when Japanese were being set on fire and shot with triumphant music playing. This movie is around a 5/10 for me but I can't understand people calling it the modern day "Apocalypse Now" (that title belongs to Dunkirk)!

Dunkirk isn't the modern day Apocalypse Now, as good as it is.
