Vaudevillian overkill at times, yes. The Wizard of Oz is still The Wizard of Oz. It also ends, unlike ROTK.

The Wizard of Oz wins. Middle Earth may have better style, but Oz (ever so slightly) trumps it in substance. Aside from its all-time classic status, The Wizard of Oz boasts a stronger lead and a more tangible and present villain... and irresistibly catchy show tunes.
Even though it's over 70 years old, The Wizard of Oz is still impressive to look at. It's a stone cold classic, no doubt. That said, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the better, more epic story. The Hobbits beat the Munchkins.
This i one of those gutwrenching matchups. I pick Return of the King ive seen it way more times.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is the greatest film ever.

The Wizard of Oz can't match up to Return of the King in technical craftsmanship and pure entertainment.
