New on DVD, Blu-ray, Warner Archive and Netflix Instant: October 12, 2010
How do this week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases rank against the best movies of all-time?
How to Train Your Dragon (Friday October 15th) (DVD and Blu-ray | PG | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best animated movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #2829 |
I never got a chance to see this in theaters. Does it end with a pop song and big dance scene like every other DreamWorks Animation movie? I firmly believe that’s the main reason DreamWorks (Sony and Fox’s animation studios are guilty of this too) will never make a truly great film.
Jonah Hex (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best movies based on comic books of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #8515 |
The biggest turkey of the year. Sad, considering there’s probably a good movie to be made with the source material.
I Am Love (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best dramatic films of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #9237 |
Read Ebert’s review. There’s a reason he won a Pulitzer.
Leaves of Grass (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best movie comedies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #8470 |
Edward Norton in a dual-role as a set of wildly different twins. Or as I call it, cinematic bliss.
Lost Boys: The Thirst (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best thrillers of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: Just Added |
The original Lost Boys definitely deserves to remain in the public’s consciousness. I’m pretty sure these DTV sequels do not.
Classics and Re-releases on DVD and Blu-ray:
Pretty Maids All in a Row (Warner Archive DVD | R | 1971)
How would you rank it amongst the best black comedies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #7420 |
Rock Hudson, Telly Savalas, Angie Dickinson and Roddy McDowall star in a movie about:
A married teacher is the athletic coach and faculty advisor. He starts to have sex flings with his female students and eventually has to kill several of the girls to keep them quiet.
I pre-ordered this the second Warner Archive announced the title. The Warner Archive also has a slew of fun looking horror movies from the 50s/60s/70s coming out this week too!
- The Disembodied
- The Todd Killings
- The Hypnotic Eye
- Cyclops
- Macabre – Directed by William Castle!
The Darjeeling Limited (Criterion Collection Blu-ray and DVD | R | 2007)
How would you rank it amongst the best road movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #799 |
This is one of those movies I instantly bought upon its initial home video release but never got around to watching.
The Magician (Criterion Collection Blu-ray and DVD | NR | 1958)
How would you rank it amongst the best psychological dramas of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: Just Added |
Criterion release of yet another Ingmar Bergman gem.
Magic (Blu-ray | R | 1978)
How would you rank it amongst the best supernatural horror movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #3298 |
Ann-Margret, Anthony Hopkins and Burgess Meredith in a movie about a Ventriloquist and his evil dummy.
Busby Berkeley 9-Film Collection (DVD | NR | 1930s)
Busby Berkeley was king of the movie musical in the 1930s. As time passed, he proved to be something of a racist, one-trick pony but it was one hell of a trick for about 7 years. |
Movies Include:
- FOOTLIGHT PARADE – One of my top-5 favorites of all -time. James Cagney just kills in it.
- 42ND STREET
- GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933
- DAMES
- GOLD DIGGERS OF 1935
- GOLD DIGGERS OF 1937
- VARSITY SHOW
- HOLLYWOOD HOTEL
- GOLD DIGGERS IN PARIS
Astaire & Rogers Ultimate Collector’s Edition (DVD | NR | 1930s)
Wow, what a great week to be a fan of musicals. These Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire movies are great to pop in if you’ve ever had a bad day. They’re just so sweet and perfect. |
Movies Include:
- FLYING DOWN TO RIO
- THE GAY DIVORCEE
- ROBERTA
- TOP HAT
- FOLLOW THE FLEET
- SWING TIME
- SHALL WE DANCE
- CAREFREE (Massively underrated and deliciously surreal when viewed with “modern” sensibilities)
- THE STORY OF VERNON AND IRENE CASTLE
- THE BARKLEYS OF BROADWAY
The Hangover (“Extreme Edition” Blu-ray | R | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best buddy movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #260 |
I can’t tell why they double-dipped this. It looks like the only addition is a new box and a 28-page wedding photo album.

How would you rank it amongst the best military comedies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #207 |
Red Dragon (Blu-ray | R | 2002)

How to train your dragon is a truly great Dreamworks Film. That’s all I have to say about that. I feel very similarly when it cones to Dreamworks. This time around, they raised the bar for Pixar, and in my honest opinion, Toy Story3 didn’t match.
