New Video Releases for the Week of May 4th, 2010
This week features a pretty solid and varied collection of movies. I’m not going to say some don’t look offensively bad, but I think the good outweighs them this week. The Warner Brothers Archive has some fun looking movies and Netflix continues to add some better than average movies to their instant watch service.
New Releases
Tetro (DVD and Blu-ray)
The thought of sitting down and watching a new Coppola movie gets me giddy. For some reason every one of his recent movies seems to me like a long lost Hitchcock or Hawks movie. It just seems like this huge event from a long-lost talent, even though he’s (thankfully) still with us. He’s done a great job cocooning himself and his style is so pure that it feels like we’re uncovering these wonderful lost masterpieces from long ago.

Nine (DVD and Blu-ray)
I unabashedly love musicals. I enjoy real-life but I definitely wouldn’t complain if people broke out a song/dance every once in a while to converse with me. Even though it wasn’t too well received, there’s some interesting talent involved, it’s got to be worth at least a rent, right?

Tooth Fairy (DVD and Blu-ray)
Now that Dwayne Johnson has his money, can he please start using his amazing natural charisma for good again? It’s really hard to find people so innately likable on the big screen. It’s just sad watching his talents go to waste. Although, I am intrigued by his two movies for 2010. It seems like Hollywood Producers and his agent realized he can be both funny (The Other Guys) and a bad-ass (Faster).

Matinee (DVD)
I had never actually heard of this movie before I started researching this week’s titles. I have no doubt that John Goodman as a William Castle-esque schlock filmmaker/promoter from the 50’s will make for a fun little 90 minute diversion from life. It will be streaming on Netflix before the month is up as well.

Warner Brothers Archive
Flap (DVD)
With a tag line like: “A Warning to the Mayor. FLAP is here. The Indians have already claimed Alcatraz, city hall may be next. You Have Been Warned” you know this movie’s going to be entertaining. This movie just looks fantastic to me, I love comedic, exploitation-ish movies from the 70’s with no-nosense tag lines. It’s not quite on par with “…tick…tick…tick…’s” tag line but it’s close.
