like 2001: A Space Odyssey but with a Belgian widow doing chores instead of a space adventure

This is the film that I picked to be my 1000th and I must say, a pretty wise decision in the end. Physically and emotionally exhausting, at 200 minutes its more of an experience and an exercise in mind-numbing routine. Clearly regarded as a monumental film in feminist and arthouse cinema.

Superb lead performance from Delphine Seyrig, who captures such nuanced grief in the role of Jeanne, and wonderful direction by Akerman too. Beautifully shot, the camera never moves nor does it shoot in close-ups and with an ASL of apparently 51.4 seconds (which is insane), it could very easily come across as a hindrance to the film's effectiveness but it never does. Instead it's captures such a raw and quietly unsettling atmosphere.
