At first this film felt very 80's, from the synth soundtrack to the cliche prison scenes. But there is a moment about 20 minutes in where the film starts asking philosophical questions about the nature of man. Jon Voight gives an animalistic performance as an escaped convict. But can he tame the beast that is inside him. The beast that wants freedom so bad that he's willing to kill. There's also other ethical questions that are asked, primarily by central command, that shows that Kurosawa had something to do with this script. The only reason this is a good movie rather than a great one is because of the decade which is was birthed. 7/10
