If you are going to watch this, have a comedy ready to watch after it. This movie is probably one of the most depressing movies I have ever seen. Excellent view of WWII in Japan though.

Or you might need a comedy ready due to it being an annoying movie that's too obvious to be as emotionally manipulative as it wishes it could be.

The movie simply tries WAY too hard to be harrowing.

It does try a little too hard but it still has startling realism for an animated movie. If you want a movie that tries WAY too haha d, try Barefoot Gen.

I don't think it seems forced at all. It's a relatively straightforward account of events with a rather haunting framing system. I think some people forget that (late) WWII Japan may not have been a particualrly happy place for some.

It's a film that is incredible but is also one you wouldn't want to see again.
