it was good filmmaking, but i did not like it thematically(the closest i can think to compare it too is Melancholia, which i liked immensely more)this is basically a tragic drama with some action mixed in, centered around a wealthy family in mexico celebrating a wedding in the midst of social unrest.there was some great imagery and camera work; and some suspenseful and emotional moments; but overall i felt it was nihilistic and pessimistic about the nature of humanity to the point of being unrealistic. i felt the film at every step chose the toughest, darkest direction to go; and while on some level could be considered a cautionary tale, it was mostly just disturbing and frustrating to me(especially since there didnt seem to be a lesson to learn from the tale- some ppl were punished for being bad, but some were punished for being good, and some were punished randomly; i felt no way to predict or find meaning in the sequence of events, other than to force me to watch tragedy).all that said, i would reiterate there were several well orchestrated shots/scenes, and moments(especially toward the beginning) when i was quite intrigued(which may add to my disappointment and frustration with how it panned out)
