Warren Beatty & Al Pacino starred in this film.

One of the most successful ever translations of a pop art/cartoon aesthetic to live action, with an underrated Elfman score, and it has some real quality performances: Glenne Headly is sweet; Madonna is sexy; William Forsythe and Dustin Hoffman are tonally perfect; and Charlie Korsmo's cute without being cloying or "precocious," a hard target (apparently) to hit for a child actor. I think it's about time for Dick Tracy to be reevaluated.
Dick Tracy has impressive makeup, costumes, and sets, but overall I didn't care for it. Just not my kind of movie I guess.

The roster of actors in this movie is impressive... Beatty, Pacino, Hoffman, James Caan, Dick Van Dyke, Mandy Patinkin, Glenne Headley, Paul Sorvino, Kathy Bates, Catherine O'Hara, Estelle Parsons, Colm Meaney, Charles Durning... most of whom are only in a scene or two and hidden under so much make up it takes a second to register who it is. The art direction is insane -- manages to live up to the original comic strip in a way that somehow still holds up. And on top of that -- you have a crazy Danny Elfman score PLUS Stephen Sondheim writing at least a half dozen original songs for Madonna, Patinkin and Mel Torme to boot. On paper this movie is a mess, yet somehow it all REALLY works for me.
So much style, so little substance.
