Went to the cinemas tonight to watch Mank as it isn't streaming in my country for another couple weeks. I'm a big Fincher fan and I've come around to really loving Citizen Kane. I don't wanna speak too early (and I will watch this again on NetFlix when it drops) but I was kinda disappointed in Mank. It is good. Gary Oldman is Oscar worthy and the filmmaking is near perfect (other than not being in 4x3 which is baffling). However, it felt like I was watching a rough cut where they hadn't perfected the edit. For a movie barely over 2 hours, it feels long. I was honestly confused for most of the runtime. There's a lot of political references and meandering dialogue sequences.

I fell asleep watching this four nights in a row. I think the movie really did dialogue, and blocking well. But I agree that it didn't have that Fincher magic we've come to expect of him. And I would have not understood most of the references if I weren't currently in film school and learning about that time period and Mank himself.

Style over substance. Beautiful to watch but left me with nothing I cared about. They forgot the bait on this Oscar grab excuse for a film.

Well made, amazing performances, but I just didn't find it very engaging, especially in the flashbacks.
