*Minor spoilers*
While I don't consider myself to be a massive fan, I like the X-Men franchise just fine- in particular First Class, Days Of Future Past and the masterful Logan. For the past 19 years, it's been the smart mans comic book franchise with darker themes, politcal subtext with complex villains to go hand in hand. It had to have some sort of admiration for Apocalypse to be seen as sellout trash by me with a third act way too over the top, needless characters and sequences, a boring villain and no subtext to be find. So I was worried that Dark Phoenix would've carried the same flame. What felt like endless delays and early reviews being negative, I was even more worried. And my thoughts... meh... okay let me elaborate. There's some really great ideas in here which could've made for great character moments as well as some great subtext- and there is some here but very minimal. But for the most part, they are all very badly executed. Professor X's ego is questioned and a revelation that's been hinted at for a few movies now is completely wasted. Jean's past is interesting but rushed.

I don't enjoy playing this card but I feel like there's no other way to put it- Dark Phoenix is high budgeted fan fiction. Everything in the film screams this to me. The dialogue is awful, characters feel simplified and the performances, while some are good, others feel off. It's directed by Simon Kinberg in his directional debut after writing 4 previous instalments and... yeah... he should continue writing because the direction is as weak as the tone is joyless. And the cinematography... my God, what's with all the close-ups? I saw this on a 28 metre wide screen (that's big where I live but I don't know how it compares to the rest of the world) and nearly every second shot is right up close to the actors face and it gets uncomfortable after awhile.

Overall thoughts; I can't hate this movie and it is better than Apocalypse in my opinion. It's more of a frustrating movie than a bad one. The action sequences are very cool and the ideas are all there but the execution is sloppy and joyless. I like First Class for its energy more than anything else but now, 8 years later, that spark has disappeared entirely...

... Oh and I almost forgot, there's a secondary villain in here and their entire existence in this movie is pointless. Sure, there's a great action sequence as a result of them but in terms of 'plot', surely there was a way to write around them!

The lynch mob mentality seems to be strong here in regards to critics and spite-filled haters of the franchise. Pitch forks and torches came out in preproduction and apparently feeble minded followers can do nothing but follow the lead of the detractors. Why do I say that? Simply stated, the film itself isn’t bad. In fact, at times it’s quite good and quite complex.

Vastly underrated! A huge return to form after “Apocalypse”.

There's been some really good X-Men movies in the last 20 years but this sure as hell isn't one of them. Aggressively mediocre, Kinberg wasted a hell of a cast here.
