I was considering Ran to be top 3 Kurosawa until the over-dramatic and silly Shakespearean finale. Still a great epic, but could have been so much more if it had a realistic and sensible ending.

That's a fair point. I think the ending with both the (SPOILERS) Dad and son dying is what holds it back from making my top 100.
