Ridiculous premise? Check. industrial military complex propaganda? Check. Horrible one-liners? Check. Better than Top Gun? Absolutely. May be nostalgia speaking, but revisiting this beloved movie I saw as a kid, I still love it. Louis Gossett Jr's performance is superb and this movie's got a lot of heart with a notable scenes between him and Jason Gedrick. Plus the soundtrack selection is "jammin" to quote a character from the movie. Be warned though, most of the tracks on the original soundtrack CD/album are not in the movie, so you should look elsewhere.
