A movie like this was doomed to fail. And by fail, I don't mean it was terrible, it just wasn't close to the suspense the book created. It felt cheap and cheesy at times. It would have been interesting to see someone like David Fincher take a jab at this. He is the only director I trust 100% to put out a solid book to screen film every time.
