A powerful and very well done movie. But personal preference for movie of the year is still Wolf of Wall Street.

12 Years a Slave was the film of the night. It was a pretty good film filled with strong performances. There were some pacing problems at times, but it was done for effect so I could appreciate it more than dislike it for a lack of talent. Still not my pick for Best Picture (I prefer Wolf of Wall Street), but one of 2013's finest offerings.

Good film but overrated in how it has been labelled as brilliant

Probably the most powerfully acted film of the year but NOT the BEST overall.

One of the best films of all time. It's flawless, the cinematography is great, acting is suberb, the score is amazing and really adds to the experience when it's present. The direction is great, how things are revealed and presented are done with subtlety and skill. I like the fact that first we just see the aftermath of the violence always and then when it's actually shown it's that more effective and sad. That level of detail and intelligence that shows in Steve McQueen's directing is incredible. 12 Years a Slave is an excellent film that is incredibly emotional and gripping without annoying manipulation, cheesiness or melodrama which could have easily been the case if the director was somebody else than the masterful Steve McQueen.

While I prefer Wolf a bit over this, it winning best picture is still great. One of the best movies of the decade. Amazing performances, fantastic direction, and unflinching brutality. This movie forces us to witness the true depths of human depravity during this era
