Looks right and has the framework of a great noir, but it sags a bit in the middle. Dennis O'Keefe has neither the looks nor charm to pull off the homme fatale in the love triangle. Claire Trevor is great as Pat but Ann, the better angel of Joe's nature, isn't credible, despite the terrific Marsha Hunt's best efforts. Raymond Burr makes a great heavy but is under-utilized.Swap out O'Keefe for Burt Lancaster, figure out a way to give Burr a bit more screentime and it's not hard to imagine this movie topping lists as one of the great noirs.
