The Band Wagon vs. The Clock

I gotta comment on this one, if only to put in a plug for The Clock, a rare non-musical role for Judy Garland. It's an extremely sweet little movie about a serviceman on leave who meets Garland and they decide on the spot to get married, but they have very little time before his leave is up. I'm a big Garland fan in general, but films like this prove she's more than just a set of magnificent pipes. But as far as this matchup goes, The Band Wagon is one of the best musicals ever made, with a magnificent combination of incredible dancing, tongue-in-cheek satire, and solid supporting comic relief.
