Both are solid films. The new version is grittier and add more depth to the Jets and Sharks. The original feels more like a musical with the bright moments, but feels brief at times. I do prefer the new film.
Each have their strengths and weaknesses, although sometimes they run parallel: neither version of Tony is particularly appealing. But the Wise/Robbins film confidently establishes its own language as a musical film; I'm not sure Spielberg's does.
Spielberg's version is grittier and less polished. They both are filled with great dancing and compelling acting from everyone. I just prefer the ebb and flow of the original but consider both films excellent.
Surprisingly I have to give the edge to the remake for more grit and polish (still love the original too though)
