Rather good matchup. "Make Way for Tomorrow" is a fantastic Leo MacCarey film that influenced one of the great Japanese films, "Tokyo Story". "Ikiru" is probably my favourite Kurosawa, and quite close to his best. Takashi Shimura's performance in that film is one of the finest performances I've ever seen and the film, as painful to watch as it is, is brilliant from start to finish. "Ikiru" wins for me.
