Two mind trips that are subtly critical of recognized authorities and established narratives, but I also have qualms with both. Liberty Valance by an edge.

The Manchurian Candidate has a killer plot, but it really doesn't have the tension it should have (it's a thriller with hardly any thrills.) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance has its problems (starting with its two too-old lead actors), but it's nearly always entertaining. The western wins...
