Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! vs. A New Kind of Love

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward prove to be unexpectedly good in these two comedies, but unfortunately the material isn't great, and neither film showcases them equally. Veteran Leo McCarey doesn't quite succeed in turning Paul into the new Cary Grant in Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys!, but he is able to draw out a talent for physical comedy in the star that isn't showcased anywhere else. On the other hand, A New Kind of Love belongs wholly to Joanne and her partnership with a typically wisecracking Thelma Ritter. As far as direction, McCarey takes it, but the native American reenactment at the end severely dates his movie. A New Kind of Love just has a higher ratio of good elements to bad.
