The Fly II vs. Dead Space: Downfall

Two sub-par sci-fi horrors, one a sequel to one of the best body-horror films of all time, the other an animated prequel to a much celebrated (if derivative) video game in the vein of Alien and Event Horizon. To be honest, Dead Space: Downfall was probably the more even bag, with decent animation, passable voice-acting and some suitably yucky gore, even if it didn't hold up much to the game it was tagging onto and there was a much more interesting prequel story in the form of a comic/animated comic series released in the last few months prior to the game's release, depicting a different perspective of the same events in tandem with the film's story. That being said, it would be nothing without the game, and it's pretty unremarkable. The Fly 2 obviously has nothing on the original film; you only have to realise that it's being directed by one of the visual effects guys (Chris Wallas) who worked on the first film, who clearly has more of an eye for amping up the gore and violence (admittedly no small task with a film series like The Fly) than he does with character, chemistry or a fabled story served by a relatively grounded and interesting Sci-Fi premise, which becomes increasingly contrived in this film. That said, the two leads are reasonably likable, the climax is enjoyable to watch as a gory action sequence, and it does have a number of scenes which still stick out in memory as surprisingly effective and occasionally poignant, even if they do rely on cliches to help them work (the dog, anyone?). So The Fly 2 wins for standing up better on it's own merits than Dead Space: Downfall does.
