1962 was a superb year for movies. To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite and these two are pretty much tied for second. I'll give it to Lawrence of Arabia.

Only some hammy acting prevents The Longest Day from being considered one of the best movies of all time, I think. I could watch it again and again. The action and directing have rarely been surpassed in war moviedom. Yet as good as it is, Lawrence is almost perfect in every way, so it wins.
