The two best films of 1931. City Lights has an awkward style of comedy being a serious drama too whilst M shows a perfect amount of everything. M

I liked both, but was disappointed by both. M for the win.
Love M, but Chaplin gets the nod.

City Lights has some good stuff in it, but isn't great either. City Lights>M

I like M more because of the suspense, and the story has stuck with me since I've seen it. City Lights is also good, but M wins out. What's interesting is both of these use leitmotifs for characters. M has In the Hall of the Mountain King for Beckert and City Lights has La Violetera for the blind flower girl.
