Two modern day masterpieces. Both in my top 20. The Tree of Life might be a better film but it loses to The Dark Knight for it lacking it's entertainment and rewatch value. This is a scenario where I'll go with my personal preference, otherwise from a technical standpoint TTOL would crush TDK.

The Tree of Life has better cinematography than TDK and it really is just an experience that is near unrivaled. But, unfortunately, TDK crushes on literally every single other level. It's better written, better acted, has more complex and introspective themes, and it's more entertaining.
