Skyfall vs. Inception

Did anyone else notice the similarities between Silva's island in Skyfall and the design of limbo in Inception? One can certainly sense the influence of Nolan's blockbusters on Mendes' 007 entry. I was thoroughly entertained by both but Inception is cerebral, masterful sci-fi. Oh and I really wish they had taken inspiration from Nolan's visual style instead of blindly copying key plot points and overall content.

It's interesting to see how much inspiration Nolan took from the James Bond movies. There's a scene in The Dark Knight Rises where they hijack a plane in The Dark Knight Rises that is straight out of Licence to Kill. In The Dark Knight, the Joker wears shoes with blades in them, which is straight out of From Russia with Love. And ofcourse there is the base assault in the third dream in Inception which is straight out of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (which apparently is Christopher Nolan's favorite Bond movie (good taste!)). Now we have a James Bond movie inspired by Christopher Nolan's work, specifically The Dark Knight. The tone is pretty much the same (maybe a little more jokey), and the villain is kind of similar in character (NOT in plans). And with Christopher Nolan saying he is interested in directing a Bond movie, I guess we're almost full circle.

Both Bond and Bats do secret agent/detective-like work so some similarities are bound to be there. The look and feel of TDK was inspired from Heat, Begins' from Blade Runner. That's what I meant by taking inspiration from a film's visual style. Skyfall doesn't do that and Nolan's influence on it is undeniable: Silva used to work for M (Bane was part of the LoS), Silva planned to get caught (as did The Joker), Bond has to rebuild himself after the train accident (Bruce has to come out of retirement), Silva burns down Bond's house (Ras did that in Begins), Severine leads Bond to to Silva (Catwoman takes Bats to Bane), Eve Moneypenny (Blake's name is Robin), Bardem locked up in the cell is eerily similar to The Joker, Q basically does what Lucius did in the trilogy, Skyfall handles themes of terrorism (like TDK), and so on and so on... Besides, Bond has been a film icon for 50 years with 23 films based on the character. Nolan's made only 3 Batman films. But at the end of the day Bond, Batman, Bourne, Ethan Hunt -- same shit dude.

There's a scene in The Dark Knight Rises where they hijack a plane, which is straight out of Licence to Kill.**

...So what are you trying to tell me? That Skyfall took things from Nolan's work...or not? Or that you don't care it's almost the same? I wasn't trying to argue and I wasn't criticising Skyfall or The Dark Knight (or Nolan's work in general), I was just pointing some things out. And c'mon now; the similarities with The Dark Knight Rises are just coincidental. Similar and sometimes almost identical, yes, but coincidental. TDKR was released in late July and Skyfall in late October; Skyfall finished filming in late May. Also: Q inspired Lucius, not the other way around.

Even if we remove TDKR from the equation, the similarities are still aplenty (I don't know which of the two was written first). What I'm saying is simple: Bond inspired Nolan and Nolan inspired Skyfall.

Fair enough. And Skyfall possibly inspired Nolan (...to direct a future Bond movie).

I gonna go SkyFall, Inception is decent at best... i am going to get destroyed for saying this.

I totally agree, the similarity in terms of structure of the Island in Skyfall and limbo in Inception. That being said, Inception is the far superior flick.

Now, if Nolan could direct a 007 film, there'll be a contest...inception!

what are you guys thinking?!?!?

I'm thinking Inception is just slightly the superior flick....

the hardest peek I've seen today... Im gonna go with Skyfall, I enjoyed much more and It doesn't seem to be way to complex as inception. Been complex doesn't mean is the best movie eve...

This is pretty tough, and they are virtually equal in my chart. I think I'm going to lean ever so slightly towards Skyfall, since a) Bond just stirs the cinematic patriot in me, and b) I am ever so slightly more enamoured by Sam Mendes' directorial style than I am by Christopher Nolan's. It's not that I don't like Nolan; I do, but I haven't yet seen a Sam Mendes film to give me reason to doubt him, whereas TDKR took multiple viewings. Anyway, both of these are in my top 50 and shall remain there for some time to come. Skyfall wins by a hair.

Inception for me.

F'ing dreams.

Skyfall is only better than Inception in the 4th level of a dream. Skyfall may be the most boring of the Bond films, the plot makes no sense, and it's ending is downright stupid. Inception rocks as a mind-bending, sci-fi thriller. I just wish I could watch Inception again for the first time and relive that sense of awe I had when walking out of the theater.

Interception.

Inception

Interesting discussion board. Inception wins this for me. Casino Royal beats Inception though

Inception is a much stronger film for me personally. Skyfall was decent enough but I never really feel the urge to revisit it yet.
