Wow! Two John Hughes masterpieces in the same week he passed away. I prefer Pretty in Pink but Sixteen Candles is awesome as well.

pretty in pink is so shallow. easy choice for me.

I would say 16 Candles is the shallow film here. It's a pretty typical (though not prototypical) take on loneliness. The choices that the characters ultimately make in Pretty in Pink are shallow, but that breaks away from movie conventions. And it's just funnier than 16 Candles.
