Not as close as they appear. While Dances With Wolves does have moments where it feels like an American classic, it fails to be completely engrossing throughout. Whereas The Deer Hunter is superbly written with a wonderful ensemble cast. It is a generational film that sadly gets lost in the Vietnam era shuffle against Platoon or Apocalypse Now.

It's close, but Deer Hunter doesn't hold up as well over multiple viewings.
