Easy. Very easy. I love good special effects, but characters I care about are pretty important too. And a story is not bad either. Some good actors can help too. An enemy thats actually scary can improve a movie too. And yes, character development is not a bad thing either. Lord of the Rings has all of the above, Avatar exceeds in one.

they are mixed ideas; both with speical effects and sci-fi. i suggest both!

This is a difficult one. Avatar is a great sci fi. But Lord of the Rings wins because it's a great fantasy film that part of a more successful franchise.

The Fellowship is a weird movie for me, because I just thought it went on and on, and that hurt my enjoyment of it. Avatar didn't seem to, although both are (in their theatrical cuts anyway) the same length. I chalk this up to me finding the latter more interesting, although it also might be because I grew up between the eight year gap.I'm choosing Avatar, although I probably should rewatch Fellowship at some points.
