Avatar was really good, mainly because special effects and....yeah, Sam Worthington sucks @$$ at acting. Shawshank wins this by a mile
The Shawshank Redemption is a modern classic; Avatar simply can't measure up.
Avatar is overrated. The Shawshank is a near perfect movie if I ever saw one.
I see Avatar as incredibly overrated, and even though I'm no big fan of the Shawshank Redemption as well, I'd much rather spend 2 hours watching the escapade of Tim Robbins, than the adventures of the blue aliens.

Avatar is very average and while not terrible it's underwhelming. Shawshank on the other hand is a masterpiece so it wins. The only thing Avatar has over Shawshank are the technicals but Shawshank felt like it had more effort because of the lower budget. So Shawshank wins.
