The Silence vs. The Painted Veil

Are both of these about people not communicating? I think so. I need to rewatch The Silence again to decipher it. There are intellectual characters in both films paired up with non-intellectuals (who are promiscuous?). And the intellectual in both films has health problems... Maybe these movies are really similar. Anyway, The Silence was surprisingly steamy for being made 50 years ago. It's one of those European flicks. The Painted Veil resonates with me more, but The Silence is one of those rare movies where there's always something of interest going on. Even though it could've been boring in less capable film-making hands. These are both good.
