Star Wars vs. Star Trek: The Motion Picture

There will be blood...no not the movie...the debate over these two films...rivers of it.

Damn, this is going to be ugly.

Better story and better characters.

It's a total mismatch, obviously Star Wars takes this one. But put Wrath of Khan up against Empire... now you've got a fight.

While in my heart of hearts I'm a Trekker, the first film was somewhat lacking. On the other hand, "Star Wars" started out amazing and slowly lost steam.

I don't think this is much of a debate. There are plenty of huge Trekkies/Trekkers who think the first Star Trek film is one of the weaker ones. As a dabbler in both franchises, I *HAVE* to give this to Star Wars.

Since these are the first episodes in each series I would have to go with Star Wars. Star Trek in general has more interesting characters, story developments et-cetera but the first of the Star Trek movies was a tad on the weak side. Star Wars on the other hand started out interesting enough but quickly developed into children's entertainment. So while Star Trek grew through each volume and Star Wars quickly deteriorated the original Star Wars beats out the original Star Trek movie.

Wow...a trully epic match up. I have to go with Star Wars. It was a far bigger phenomenon than Star Trek because it didn't have a huge fan base before it came out.

Now, I much prefer the Star Trek universe to Star Wars universe, but there really is no contest as to which had a better first movie. Star Wars had excitement, adventure, space battles, and a teen Luke Skywalker whining to his uncle and aunt before they get dead. Star Trek: The Motion Picture had looooooong shots of the ship, of space, of the crew. Now, I've only ever seen the director's cut, but considering it takes over an hour for something to happen (when the energy probe comes in and takes Ilia away . . . and no, I'm not counting the ship entering the wormhole as something exciting, 'cos all it did was make me think how something supposedly so dangerous could be portrayed so boringly. It'd be like if in Star Wars for the final battle on the death star, rather than showing the battle and feeling the tension in the thick of things, Lucas decided to film it from the perspective of one of the fighters assigned to hang back and guard the flank. Sure, he's part of it, but he's not really doing anything and you don't get a sense of the importance of it all.) then it just can't hold your interest. Whenever anyone asks me which I like better, Star Trek or Star Wars, I always without fail say Star Trek, but if someone asks me whether I prefer the movie Star Wars or Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Wars is going to win easily.

Here's the real question: Are we talking about the original, theatrical versions or subsequent versions? Because the Director's Cut of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" that hit DVD is *vastly* superior to the meandering theatrical release. It may be heresy, but I prefer Jerry Goldsmith's "Trek" score to John Williams's for "Wars." I'm going with "Star Wars" anyway, though, because of one thing: Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi made me interested in the "Star Wars" universe.

Okay, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie, but The Motion Picture is deadly dull. (I've seen that Director's Cut, too.) Sooner or later, I'm gonna give it another go, because I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Trekkie, and a glutton for punishment, but this is no contest. I've voted more than two hundred films higher than the original Star Wars (including its two sequels; screw the prequels), but it wins this battle hands-down.

No Trek fan would say that TMP is better than Star Wars. It's nowhere near the best example of Trek, in fact it's the worst of the original films in my opinion. Put Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country, or the reboot up there to have a real discussion.

I agree wit Talison. Star Wars: A new Hope beats TMP hands down. But the Reboot beats any of SW:Episodes 1-3 (the newer ones).

If this was Franchise VS Franchise I wouldn't be able to choose, but a New Hope vs TMP, new hope is far better, but some of the other trek films would beat it, in my opinion.

Star Wars is a way better movie than the original Star Trek film (even all the Star Trek Films -- Star Trek is way better than all the Star Wars Prequels --- Return of the Jedi is a bigger fight over the best Star Treks....that is all!)

Star wars is better doesn't matter which films, characters etc your talking about star wars FTW don't get my wrong I respect what star trek is and what it's done for the industry as a whole but if your talking about the movies or the universes as a whole( characters, weapons planets, species etc)any way star wars 4 is better than star trek tmp if TPM was switched with ANH then there might be a slim chance for star trek fans to. convince me to change my views

Finally watched the first star trek...... Dear god .... It's long and boring..... Those long shots just don't seem to end. Star Wars, easily

Motion Picture was awful, it is a miracle how it's three sequels turned out. As for this match, Star Wars without a question.

I don't think Motion Picture is a bad movie but Star Wars wins, no contest
