The Adventures of Robin Hood vs. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

If you choose to 1991 Costner version then never speak to me again. The only thing better than the Errol Flynn Robin Hood is the Errol Flynn CAPTAIN BLOOD, my personal favorite swashbuckler of all time.

I'm a fan of Kevin Costner as a star of Westerns, but it didn't translate to swashbuckler. The two performances that make "Prince of Thieves" are from Morgan Freeman and Alan Rickman. As far as Robin Hoods go, I don't know if anyone will ever beat Errol Flynn.

I loved the Kevin Costner version, but I think the Errol Flynn film is the best Robin Hood film.

But now I have changed my mind. I love the tone of the Kevin Costner version.

The earlier Technicolor classic is just a riotously fun time, without burdening the film with political baggage (except, possibly, for "rob from the rich and give to the poor), and Errol Flynn to this day has no equal as swashbuckling movie star. Kevin Costner, by himself, weighs down Prince of Thieves, but there's also no joy to be found anywhere (p.s.: Claude Rains is also a better villain than Alan Rickman)
