Two movies that could have been great, but were ruined by how punishingly safe they decided to play it. Passengers at least has an interesting first half. Martian was filled with poor structure, bad supporting characters, rank stupidity, unfitting comedy, and deus ex machinas.
The Martian did go for laughs a bit too much, but I still found it to be top-shelf entertainment. Passengers was a disappointment. I'll take The Martian every time.
