Sonatine vs. Violent Cop

Sonatine may be TOO understated and icy. I can get into "slow" movies, I love it when directors use stillness as a tool, and the jarring, unglamorized violence is great, but the characters often don't react in remotely human ways. There's a lot to like about it, but it's flawed. Violent Cop is Kitano's real early minor classic. Nihilism overload, in any case.
