WHY AM I THE FIRST ONE TO COMMENT ON THIS? THIS IS THE MOST EPIC HORROR MATCH UP EVER. Actually they're pretty much the only two horror movies that I actually appreciate. Whatever. Enough with this. The Shining easily wins. "WHEN DO YOU THINK MAYBE HE SHOULD BE TAKEN TO A DOCTOR?"
my two favourite horror films. Psycho used to be my favourite horror film, but then I saw The Shining and that became my favourite. I've only seen both of these movies once and I'm starting to forget The Shining but I Psycho is still really fresh in my mind. So I suppose Psycho is more memorable, but for now I'm going to go with The Shining. We'll see if my mind changes after repeat viewings.
Psycho all the way!
Geez...what's more iconic -- the silhouette of Norman Bates from the shower sequence, or Jack's "Here's Johnny!" creepy-face sticking out of the axe-beaten door? Mirrors and reflections have a constant presence in these two highly influential movies, probably to create a group of characters with no fixed or true identity. Kubrick was more prolific in the presentation of this concept, imo. THE SHINING is my favorite horror flick, and it's a lesson in precise filmmaking. PSYCHO ain't that scary.
Both have many iconic scenes but, taken as a whole, Psycho is the superior film.
The Shining. The Overlook is like a terrifying psychological maze; The Bates Motel is not.
Shining holds up better.
I dunno, but I just wanna say that part where Norman rushes that detective guy near the stairs is more strangely startling than any murder scene made since, pretty much.
Both are pretty even, but personally, it goes to The Shining.
The Shining wins....because it's actually a bit scary...
Psycho is a better movie.
The Shining. More memorable, more terrifying, more entertaining.
I really can't choose, but maybe the Shining for Nicholson's amazing performance and the extra suspense! As a director, I love Hitchcock much more, but perhaps the Shining is better
Probably Psycho. Both are amazing.
The shining all the way. I respect psycho but the shining has much more symbolism and thrill to it Psycho still holds up to be one great film though
The Shining for it's atmosphere.
Very, very close. Psycho wins, today but tomorrow I may think differently...
Two superb horror films by two of the greatest directors of all time and both also left me in shock. The Shining wins.
The Shining is a top 5 horror all time for me, but Psycho is top 1.
Kubrick can't beat Hitchcock at his best. Both of these are great, but I definitely prefer Psycho.
wow it starts strong. I have to say Psycho, but both fantastic
As much as I adore Hitchcock I do not think Psycho is his best work also the Shining also has an eerie feeling that you cant shake and I also think there is a bit more to the Shining story wise so Ill have to go with it this time
I thought Kubrick took too long to tell a fairly simple story in The Shining while Hitchcock got it right with the runtime of Psycho. Thus, I prefer Psycho's streamlined approach to a simplistic story which optimizes every minute of the runtime with no wasted scenes or dialogue.
The Shining. A masterclass of horror, tension and suspense. Psycho is great, but I just dont think it stands up to The Shining(In my opinion at least).
oh my god... idk if i can even pick
Psycho, once again
Both have aged quite a bit, Psycho a lot more so. I think The Shining, today, has retained more suspense and is a better thrill in general.
Both great movies but I'll go with Psycho
I love both movies, but if I was forced to choose one, it would be The Shining.
My 5 things why The Shining is superior to Psycho is generally favorable to Shining
Shining for ever, and ever, and ever
Two of my favorite directors of all time, but Hitchcock beats Kubrick here.
Again ? Jack Nicholson
Hitchcock's #4 film vs. Kubrick's masterpiece. Kubrick's masterpiece by far
Shining by a hair.
Both the best horror movies ever made and maybe the Exorcist.
It's a perfect match. The two best horror flicks of all time by the two best directors of all time (Sorry, Kurosawa). Both masterpieces that blow me away. Though Psycho don't had Jack Nicholson turn, so realistic ton and masterful touch of Kubrick, the thing that made Psycho anything special is enough to this nearly tie match: the spectacular, creative, and unexpected twist (happily never read nothing about these films before watching them), adding the Hitchcock masterful touch, give it to Psycho.
Psycho by the edge of a sharpened knife (or axe).
Psycho take it, but what a Halloween double feature!
Possibly the two best horror films ever made. Hitchcock and Psycho vs. Kubrick and The Shining. I'm going with Kubrick and The Shining but it can always change.
decisive win for The Shining for my preferences. Just added it up and that makes it a 21 to 21 tie in the comments here
Definitely Psycho . Hitchcock > Kubrick
both excellent, and i wish i could have seen psycho before every plot development became absolutely iconic, but i have to go with kubrick over hitchcock
Psycho is much better
The Shining is certainly the better classic film.
Psycho all day long.
The Shining is far masterpiece standard here.
The Shining defines horror films.
on Jan 10
Probably my two favorite horror movies. I'm a big fan of both Hitchcoxk and Kubrick and this time Kubrick wins with The Shining.
