The two best films of 1940. "The Great Dictator" is a clever, hilarious and a near perfect comedy. "Rebecca" is a fantastic exploration as to the artificiality when people of different social classes are put together, is a beautiful portrait of poverty and wealth and is a fascinating drama. As visually stunning, perfectly acted and brilliantly directed as it is, "The Great Dictator" wins for its endless energy.
