The Manchurian Candidate vs. The Manchurian Candidate

Toughie.

One of the worst remakes I've ever seen.

Not a toughie at all as far as I'm concerned. The only things the remake had going for it were the presence of Denzel Washington (a better actor than Sinatra, IMHO) and, I suppose, the fact that Rosie was tied in to the main plot. But the subtlety, the experimentalism, the flat-out weirdness (the Gardening Club!) of the original was lost in the remake, which comes across as just another political thriller. And nothing, and I mean NOTHING in the remake begins to compare to Angela Lansbury's final monologue. Oh my goodness.
