Singin' in the Rain is unquestionably my favorite Gene Kelly movie; it's his best role, but the wonderful Jean Hagen still manages to steal the show. All of the flimmaking jokes make it that much more fun. An American in Paris, while sporting a superb Gershwin score, is nothing in comparison.
Singin' in the Rain. Not only is it Gene Kelly's crowning achievement, but it's also the greatest musical ever made. Movies don't get any better.
An American in Paris is a really great ballet with a so-so movie tacked onto it. The characters and situations of Singin' in the Rain are so much more entertaining.
