The Lion in Winter vs. The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still is something of a fluke for me - a film with a cast that I couldn't name if I was holding a copy of the DVD in my hand that ended up being uncannily emotionally resonant with me. The Lion in Winter was a film that I normally would have hated with every fiber of my being, but watching this film was like eating the world's most delicious Brussels sprout, it was great to consume and it was good for you. I feel like The Day the Earth Stood Still was good in spite of the kind of film that it was whereas The Lion in Winter is the most unlikely confluence of source material, script, talent and performance that worked in almost absolutely every way. Who'da guessed that I could like a serious film this much, let alone two of them?
