The Damned Don't Cry has Joan Crawford hooking up with a gangster in order to live the good life. Clash by Night is about Barbara Stanwyck marrying a fisherman in order to have a stable life. These both involve women getting involved with the wrong guy because it's what they thought they wanted. The Damned Don't Cry is just a lot snappier and dramatic. Clash by Night has some conflict, but nothing all that intense.
