Whiplash.

The Grand Budapest Hotel beats J.K. Simmons.

Both are outstanding but if I have to pick one I will saw Whiplash.

Whiplash by a small margin...

love them both but whiplash has one of that terrible dinner scene

Enjoyed both, but Grand Budapest Hotel was a pleasant surprise and had more going for it: cast, performances, production design, editing, cinematography, music, comedy etc. Whiplash is an excellent vehicle for J.K. Simmons (who deserves all the praise, attention and scene-chewing roles he can get), but beyond that I found it oddly underwhelming; kind of like if Black Swan and Full Metal Jacket had a one night stand and conceived a film about drummers. Still good, but I'd prefer to sit down with Grand Budapest Hotel again.

Both incredible films in their own right, but while Grand Budapest Hotel is a Wes Anderson film done to perfection, Whiplash is a tense and riveting beast of a film. Just on sheer power and impact, I have to say Whiplash.
