Awesome comparison, surprised no one's commented yet. What similar films. One of the hardest decisions between these 2 weirdos of their genre, but gotta go with Returns. It's too classic.
Batman Returns...blegh. Gimme Watchmen any day of the week.
I prefer Watchmen, but I do like Returns better than the first Burton film.

Watchmen is a flawed film, to be sure -- the identity of the true antagonist is made far too obvious far too early due to some bizarre choices by the actors/director, and the love scene is...not ideal -- but man, the parts that work are truly stunning. The opening sequence is probably one of my top 5 of all time, and the ending somehow works better than the original graphic novel's. It hits far more than it misses, IMO, and it does so while having something pretty specific to say. Batman Returns, conversely, feels like the opposite (though the idea of a wealthy, foul-mouthed industrialist running for office might be a little too on-the-nose for some in today's climate). The darkness that ran throughout the first Batman consumes every frame here, but there's just too much about it that doesn't quite work: whereas Watchmen is deeply nihilistic, Batman Returns somehow just feels nasty. And whereas Watchmen manages to do well by its rather large cast, I feel like Batman Returns feels overstuffed with villains (and villains for the villains on top of that), and doesn't do justice to any of them. So yeah, warts and all, I'd still go for Watchmen.

Watchmen wins for me. Stunning film visually and a good adaptation of tricky source material in my opinion. Returns is a good enough film, and I love Batman stories set in winter, but it was just a little too out there for me. Especially after Burton's stellar first outing with Batman.

Watchmen for me, Rosarch was amazing, along with just amazing visual that put it over Batman Return
