Police Story vs. Jeepers Creepers

Woop, woop, that's the sound of da police whooping the ass of da beast.

Terribly corny. But I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself.

I like how they show that last stunt in Police Story from multiple angles. "That was pretty cool, wasn't it? Here, watch it again." And then the bloopers at the end. That's one generous movie. What movies lack today is generosity (and a thousand CGI explosions don't count).

American filmmakers have never understood the importance of a good setpiece. I mean, a sharp, well-choreographed setpiece. Most of them haven't, anyway. You had your Peckinpahs, your Walter Hills, Frankenheimers... Christopher McQuarrie gets it. As does John Hyams. But most of these guys? Hell no. Jackie got it. So did his brothers. So did a long list of others. "Generous" doesn't even begin to describe Hong Kong's finest. Just a shame they don't make 'em like they used to.
