The Birth of a Nation is questionable (to put it mildly) but was the major milestone in the early history of cinema. New techniques, immersive storyline, historical re-enactments. The first half and the story of the Civil War is truly great. Broken Blossoms shows what was lost with the Hays Code. Its tale of selfless love amidst brutal domestic violence, poverty and opium addiction, and is a very modern tale from 90 years ago. Broken Blossoms it is.
