The Big Sleep vs. M

Two of the great suspense films of all-time. For all of the incredible Hitchcock suspense films, M and The Big Sleep are able to stand toe to toe with most of his greatest work. M, a foreign film from Germany starring Peter Lorre and directed by Fritz Lang, is one of the greatest thrillers ever made. I only rank Psycho and Rear Window higher in the genre.

The plot of The Big Sleep is a mess, but Humphrey Bogart carries it to respectability. M needed a snappier pace; it is just too plodding, in my opinion. The Big Sleep wins.

I love Bogart, but M captivates me from beginning to end.
