My Cousin Rachel vs. Persuasion

My Cousin Rachel feels and looks very similar to Michell's earlier period piece, Persuasion, which is the problem: there's a huge tonal difference between the worlds of Jane Austen and Daphne du Maurier. While nice to look at and beautifully acted, especially by Rachel Weisz, My Cousin Rachel lacks the requisite Gothic flair and comes across more like a very polite BBC miniseries that your grandmother would love. Hitchcock and Roeg remain the only directors to do du Maurier's work justice.
