Chinatown vs. Le samouraï

Oh my God, what a matchup. This is hardly fair since I just rewatched Le Samourai. It was better than I remembered. And I loved it the first time. I don't like Faye Dunaway generally, although she's good in Chinatown. But I think Le Samourai may be perfect. The opening credits, of him just smoking on his bed, is awesome. Classy. The first 30 minutes of it is brilliant, unlike anything I've ever seen before. Melville tells so much of the story visually, and the movie is so unapologetically slow and suspenseful, I'm going to give it to Le Samourai. It's more daring in its simplicity. Chinatown, everyone would agree, it pretty damned complex and plot-centric.
